More popularly known through its generic name, budesonide, this medication is used to treat various bowel conditions. These include diseases such as Crohn’s condition and diarrhea. Although Entocort will not cure these conditions, it can reduce the symptoms to a great extent.
How it works
The drug operates in two ways. Entocort is known to be an anti-inflammatory drug since it is a corticosteroid. Therefore, it is effective in reducing inflammation in various parts of the body. This quality also enables the medication to fight the disease by reducing the body’s natural defense response.
The medication is capable of treating mild to moderate Crohn’s disease. Since the effects work on the long term, the medication can prevent remission up to three months. The drug also has the ability to treat a variety of bowel illnesses. These include diseases such as diarrhea and ulcerative colitis.
This medication is usually taken early in the morning in the pill/tablet form with or without food. It is best to consume it with a full glass of water – unless your physician specifies otherwise. Do not crush or chew the medicine since it must be followed wholly. Breaking the tablet inside your mouth will release the entire drug and increase the risk of side effects. The dosage of the drug and the length of the treatment will mainly depend on the severity of the condition and your response to the treatment.
Similar to any other medication, consuming Entocort can result in certain inevitable side effects too. Listed below are some of them.
Changes in the menstrual cycle
You might also experience severe allergic reactions in the tongue, face, lips and mouth. In such circumstances, you have to contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Make sure to keep the following precautionary methods in mind in order to avoid the above mentioned side effects.
Inform your physician if you are consuming any other medications, dietary supplements or herbal treatments alongside this drug.
Do not take the medication if you were recently vaccinated.
Ensure that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients used in the drug.
Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grape juice while consuming this medication since it can result in adverse effects.
In the case of sudden pregnancy, consult your physician and discuss the benefits and risks of taking the medication.
Your physician might ask you to come for certain lab tests. For instance, he/she will have to conduct certain examinations to assess your adrenal functioning. You must not miss any of these appointments since they are important to ensure that the treatment is working. Your response to the treatment and the occurrence of side effects need to be monitored during these tests to prevent severe complications that can happen in the future.
It is important to note that Entocort must not be used on children since the medication’s effects on children have not been confirmed yet.
