Product Description

Zocor is a commercial name for simvastatin, a synthetic lipid-lowering agent used to treat high levels of cholesterol in heart disease and type II diabetes patients. Zocor is mainly administered for adults. Zocor is not available OTC.

Drug Information

Simvastatin, the main component in Zocor, is a synthetic hypolipidemic (lipid lowering) agent derived from a fermentation product of the fungus Aspergillus terreus. Simvastatin causes dyslipidemia, a drop in the level of lipids in the form of cholesterol found in the blood. Simvastatin does so by inhibiting an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase that contributes to the development of the dreaded cholesterol within the bloodstream. High amounts of low-density lipoprotein (“bad cholesterol”) makes people more likely to develop life-threatening illnesses like strokes, type II diabetes and other issues pertaining to the heart.

Zocor is prescribed to treat conditions caused by atherosclerosis, the excessive formation of fatty plaque inside arteries. Atherosclerosis, when untreated, can lead to heart attack, stroke and other complications of the heart. Clinical studies have shown that simvastatin is significantly effective in reducing mortality rates for patients already suffering from or are at risk for cardiovascular disease.

Simvastatin is included in the List of Most Essential Medicines compiled by the World Health Organization. Medicines on this list are considered essential in a basic health care system.

Zocor is available as tablets containing 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg or 80 mg doses of simvastatin. Inactive ingredients in Zocor include hydroxypropyl cellulose, starch, citric acid, ascorbic acid, iron oxides, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, talc, lactose, titanium dioxide and butylated hydroxyanisole.
